WAKE

A dark comedy about one man’s longing for inner peace.

Uncle Marvin has died and Lawrence has returned home, looking for closure. First he has to face his past, his aunt and Marvin himself. To prepare for his trip back to his traumatic childhood home, Lawrence has been working closely with a therapist and is ready to face the dark side.

Lawrence’s quest: to be sure that Marvin is actually dead.

Summoning up the energy from The Force, Lawrence approaches the coffin. If he can at last be free from the chaos of his past, Lawrence can find serenity, harmony and breath.

From the director

“It was a joy to realize my long-term goal of directing a film that started when I first saw Star Wars and Close Encounters. Each year and each Spielberg film since 1977 has only served as a reminder to get off my ass and direct a film. Finally that pressure is off … a little. Now Wake (and its follow up project, Bone Deep) have only deepened the desire to produce/direct a feature. Will it ever end?

Wake was my first time behind the lens, calling the shots. I had no idea how it would go. I was resistant to one of my funders, the amazing CBC, telling me that we were to enter the film into a TV reality show called Short Film Face Off. Resistant until they reminded me that they gave me cash, so I should get over myself. I did. Then we won. Which was a surprise.

The prize included money and services to do it all over again. Now, in the same week we learn the NSI has taken Wake, we deliver Bone Deep to CBC and the film festival circuit.
